For this project, I wanted to create a lesson that could realistically benefit patrons at my library. Many people need to create presentations for work, school, or personal projects but may not know where to start. I chose Google Slides because it is practical, accessible, and free with a Google account. Learning the basics can also give patrons skills they can continue building on independently.

The lesson-planning process was probably the easiest part for me. After twenty years as a teacher, writing lesson plans was a huge part of my professional life, so thinking about learning outcomes, activities, timing, and assessment was second nature for me. I also know from experience that even the best lesson does not always go according to plan. Something I expect to take five minutes may take fifteen depending on the participants and their comfort level with technology. Being flexible and responsive to the people in front of me would be especially important with a beginner technology class.

For instruction, I chose a demonstrate, practice, apply approach, which was one of the most effective strategies I used when teaching technology. I would demonstrate one skill, give participants time to practice it, and then eventually have them apply what they learned by creating their own three-slide presentation. Breaking instruction into smaller steps prevents participants from having to remember too much information at once. When teaching technology, I have always believed that sometimes you have to move slow to go fast.

Keeping learners engaged is also about paying attention to what is happening in the room. I would move around while participants practice so I could identify anyone who is struggling before they become frustrated. I also think encouragement and positive feedback are incredibly important, especially for adults who may already feel intimidated by technology.

This project reminded me that teaching adults requires many of the same skills I used as an elementary educator, but the way those skills are applied may look different. Ultimately, I want participants to leave the program knowing how to create a basic Google Slides presentation and feeling more confident about trying technology on their own.
