Creating this presentation gave me the opportunity to think about how to present a makerspace proposal from the perspective of a librarian/manager rather than as a student completing an assignment. My audience was the library board, so I wanted the presentation to be professional and focused on the benefits the makerspace would bring to the community. I tried to keep the slides simple, but include all of the important information that was needed to get my point across.

Having a specific audience made the assignment easier because it helped guide my decisions. I focused on answering the questions I think a library board would have: Why does the community need this? How will it benefit patrons? Is it financially responsible? How will success be measured? Using SMART goals also helped me clearly explain how the library could evaluate how the makerspace was meeting its objectives.

I chose to create The Workshop @SCPL, a makerspace designed primarily for older adults. While many people associate makerspaces with 3D printers and expensive technology, I wanted to show that creativity can take many forms. By focusing on activities like watercolor painting, fiber arts, card making, and memory preservation, I created a space that encourages lifelong learning while also helping reduce social isolation. These activities are approachable for beginners or people weary of high tech and provide opportunities for patrons to learn new skills, and make connections with others.

I believe this makerspace could have a meaningful impact on the St. Charles community as we have an extremely large older adult population and they are the patrons we see most utilizing adult services and programs.. It would provide these older adults with a welcoming place to stay active, socialize, and continue learning in retirement. At the same time, it reinforces the library’s role as more than a place to borrow books. It becomes a community hub where people gather, create, and share experiences. Completing this project also helped me realize that successful makerspaces don’t have to rely on expensive technology. With thoughtful planning and a clear understanding of community needs, even a modest budget can create a space that has a lasting positive impact.
