I chose to create a tutorial brochure for AtoZ World Food because it is a useful database that many patrons may not realize the library offers. I know I wasn’t aware that our library offered it! It appeals to a wide audience, including home cooks, travelers, students, and anyone interested in learning about different cultures through food. The database includes thousands of authentic recipes, food culture information, ingredients, and cooking reference tools, making it a valuable resource for both learning and recreation.
I chose to create a tri-fold brochure because it is a familiar and easy-to-use format that patrons can quickly pick up while visiting the library. The brochure presents information in organized sections, making it easy to scan and follow without being overwhelming. I also included step-by-step instructions on how to access the database so patrons can confidently access it from home or at the library.
I used Canva to create my brochure because I have been using it throughout graduate school and have become comfortable with its design tools. Canva offers professional templates and makes it easy to apply the C.R.A.P design principles of contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. I used consistent colors, fonts, spacing, and headings to create a brochure that is visually appealing, organized, and easy to read. It was easy to insert screenshots, images and emojis to help illustrate my text and make it easy for a patron to follow.
To create the flow, I put myself into the mindset of the patron who would be using the database. I thought about what was important to know, beyond gaining access. There are so many great features, but it was important to highlight only a few important features. The thought was not to overwhelm my patrons, but get them interested, so they could explore and find all of the great features on their own.
I believe this brochure will help me better serve patrons by introducing them to a database they may not have discovered on their own. It also provides simple instructions for getting started and highlights some of the database’s best features. Creating this brochure gave me experience in designing user-friendly instructional materials, and I can use the same skills to develop tutorials and promotional materials for other library databases and services in the future.
